Position: Board-Certified/Board-Eligible Radiation Oncologist with subspecialty interest in Breast, CNS, and GI malignancies

AdventHealth Shawnee Mission is seeking a Board-Certified/Board-Eligible Radiation Oncologist to join our dynamic, patient-centered radiation oncology team. The ideal candidate would have a subspecialty interest in breast, gastrointestinal, and central nervous system malignancies, as these will be the primary focus of this position. The new physician should also be comfortable seeing a variety of additional tumor sites as needed. Experience or interest in gynecologic HDR brachytherapy for backup coverage is preferable but not mandatory.

We are looking for a collegial, team-oriented physician who demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills. The ability to build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with referring physicians, medical and surgical oncologists, and the broader multidisciplinary care team is essential. AdventHealth is seeking an experienced and visionary surgeon leader to serve as Medical Director of General Surgery for the Mid-America Region. This physician leader will guide the continued growth, integration, and advancement of a comprehensive regional General Surgery program while helping shape the future of surgical services across Kansas City and surrounding communities.

This is a unique opportunity to lead a developing destination General Surgery program focused on innovation, quality outcomes, physician collaboration, and strategic expansion across multiple campuses. The Medical Director will partner closely with executive and physician leadership in a dyad model to drive clinical excellence, operational performance, and long-term service line development throughout the region. 

Role Overview

The Medical Director will:

• Lead the strategic growth and clinical development of General Surgery services across the AdventHealth Mid-America Region, including Shawnee Mission, South Overland Park, Lenexa City Center, and Ottawa.
• Work with both employed and independent physician groups that total 12-15 physicians including general surgery, surgical oncology, colorectal and bariatric surgery.
• Partner with administrative leadership to oversee quality, patient safety, operational performance, physician engagement, and service line expansion.
• Advance a destination General Surgery program emphasizing personalized, evidence-based, and multidisciplinary surgical care.
• Expand the complexity and scope of surgical services, including minimally invasive and robotic surgery initiatives.
• Develop future strategies for trauma program implementation and optimization across regional campuses.
• Standardize clinical protocols, quality metrics, and operational best practices across employed and independent physician groups.
• Strengthen referral relationships and network integrity while enhancing access to surgical care throughout the region.
• Support physician recruitment, mentorship, retention, and leadership development.
• Dedicate approximately 20% of time to leadership responsibilities while maintaining an active clinical practice.

Located in Johnson County, KS, a rapidly growing market with four regional hospitals, AdventHealth Kansas City is a premier healthcare provider dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care and making significant investments in the future. Our comprehensive Neurosciences program is comprised of experienced physicians, advanced practice providers, and dedicated support staff. Practice Setting

• Our five-year-old office is located on the Shawnee Mission hospital campus with convenient access to I-35. Our building houses 30 primary care providers, and 21 specialists including 7 neurologists, 5 neurosurgeons and 7 APPs.
• Clinic staffing includes a dedicated Medical Assistant (MA), Registered Nurse (RN), and APP to support your practice and ensure efficient patient care.
• AdventHealth Shawnee Mission is a 505-bed hospital with the support of four Neurosurgeons and five specialized Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), ensuring ample collaborative opportunities and a well-rounded team environment.
• Inpatient Neuro-Hospitalist coverage is available onsite 24/7, providing continuous care and expertise for our patients.

Schedule

• Allocated block time for surgical procedures and clinic hours, allowing for a balanced and structured workflow.
• Call expectations are 1 in 5, with additional compensation for extra call duties. There is no trauma and call volumes are generally 3 consults per day, 2-3 surgeries per week.
• Thirty days of annual leave are provided, in addition to six recognized holidays, promoting a healthy work-life balance.
